How to Fit Fleet Dashcams Across Your Fleet
A dashcam installation that takes 40 minutes on one van can become a major operational risk when repeated across 400 vehicles without a defined standard. Knowing how to fit fleet dashcams is not simply about mounting a camera and connecting power. It means selecting the right camera position, protecting the vehicle electrical system, routing cables correctly, testing footage quality and making sure every installation is consistent across the fleet.
For commercial operators, the objective is reliable evidence when an incident occurs, without creating avoidable downtime, driver complaints or warranty issues. The right installation approach also makes future maintenance, vehicle transfers and system upgrades far easier to manage.
Start with the operating requirement
Before any vehicle is booked for fitting, define what the dashcam system needs to achieve. A forward-facing camera may be sufficient for collision evidence and fraudulent claim defence. Fleets operating lorries, buses, public service vehicles or high-risk delivery routes may require additional side, rear or driver-facing cameras.
The specification should cover recording resolution, viewing angle, night performance, audio requirements, event recording and storage duration. If footage will be used alongside vehicle tracking or telematics data, confirm how video events are triggered and retrieved. Harsh braking, speeding, impact detection and panic-button events can all be used to flag relevant footage, but only if the camera and telematics platform are configured to work together.
It also pays to decide early whether cameras will record continuously, only during ignition-on periods, or while parked. Parking recording can assist with theft and damage investigations, but it has implications for battery draw and installation design.
Plan how to fit fleet dashcams by vehicle type
A standard installation process is essential, but it should not assume every vehicle is the same. A panel van, articulated lorry, coach and electric bus may have very different cab layouts, windscreen shapes, fuse boards, electrical architectures and approved cable routes.
Create a vehicle-by-vehicle fitting schedule before deployment. This should identify the camera model, mounting position, power source, cable route, interface requirements and any vehicle-specific restrictions. It should also record whether the vehicle has advanced driver assistance systems, heated windscreens, rain sensors or camera housings around the rear-view mirror area.
For mixed fleets, a survey is often the difference between a controlled rollout and a series of installation exceptions. The survey identifies access constraints, fleet operating hours and any specialist equipment required before engineers arrive on site. It also prevents an unsuitable installation position from being repeated across a vehicle group.
Select a safe, usable camera position
The forward-facing dashcam should have a clear, unobstructed view of the road without interfering with the driver’s vision. In most commercial vehicles, the preferred location is high on the windscreen, close to the rear-view mirror area, subject to the vehicle layout and camera design.
The lens must sit within the wiper sweep where possible. A camera that records through dirt, condensation or an unwiped section of glass may produce poor footage at the moment it is needed most. Check that the view captures sufficient road detail, including lane position and nearby vehicles, without placing too much emphasis on the bonnet or dashboard.
Avoid mounting the camera over sensor areas, in the deployment path of airbags or where it obstructs existing safety equipment. On vehicles fitted with ADAS cameras and sensors, the installation must not affect their field of view or cabling. Do not rely on adhesive placement alone as proof that the position is suitable – verify the live image after fitting.
Driver-facing cameras need additional consideration. Their position should capture the driver area clearly while avoiding unnecessary recording of passengers, staff or sensitive areas. Operators should have a clear policy explaining why the equipment is fitted, how footage is accessed and how long it is retained.
Protect the electrical system
Professional fleet dashcam fitting normally uses a hard-wired connection rather than a plug-in accessory lead. A hard-wired installation is more secure, less likely to be disconnected and better suited to continuous or parked recording. However, it must be completed with the correct protection and in line with the vehicle manufacturer’s guidance.
The camera should be connected to an appropriate ignition-switched or permanent supply, depending on the recording requirement. Use correctly rated fusing, quality connectors and protected wiring. A low-voltage cut-off should be considered where the system records with the ignition off, particularly on vehicles that may be parked for extended periods.
Avoid tapping into safety-critical circuits or using unsuitable fuse positions simply because they are convenient. Modern commercial vehicles can have complex body control modules and CAN networks. Incorrect connections can create fault codes, battery drain or intermittent electrical issues that are difficult to diagnose later.
Where integration with telematics, a panic alarm or other vehicle technology is required, the installer should confirm the interface method before work begins. The installation should never compromise the operation of existing tracking, CCTV, lighting or communications equipment.
Route and secure cabling properly
A neat cable route is not merely cosmetic. Loose wiring can interfere with pedals, trim panels, airbags and driver controls. It can also make a system vulnerable to accidental damage or tampering.
Cables should follow existing vehicle routes where suitable and be secured at appropriate intervals. They must be protected from sharp edges, moving parts, heat sources and areas likely to collect water. Any cable passing through a bulkhead or external body panel requires suitable grommets and sealing to prevent chafing and water ingress.
On larger vehicles, multi-camera systems may require longer cable runs and more complex routing between the cab, body and trailer. These installations need careful planning around articulation points, body movement and coupling arrangements. If cameras are installed on trailers, the power and data arrangement must remain dependable when trailers are swapped or taken out of service.
Configure, test and document every installation
A dashcam is only useful if it captures usable footage and the fleet can retrieve it quickly. After fitting, check the live view, date and time, lens alignment, event triggers, audio settings and recording status. Test both daytime and low-light footage where practical.
For connected systems, confirm that the camera is communicating with the platform and that footage can be requested or downloaded by authorised users. If an event trigger is linked to telematics, perform a controlled test to verify that the event is visible against the correct vehicle record.
Each vehicle should leave the installation process with a documented completion record. This should include the vehicle registration, equipment serial number, camera position, power source, firmware version, installation photographs and any exceptions from the agreed standard. Good records reduce the time needed to investigate faults, transfer equipment or respond to an insurance query.
Manage driver communication and data policy
Dashcams affect people as well as vehicles. Drivers should understand what the cameras record, why the fleet has introduced them and how the footage will be used. Clear communication helps position the system as a safety and evidence tool rather than a surprise monitoring measure.
Policies should set out who can access footage, the circumstances in which it is reviewed, retention periods and how requests are handled. Driver-facing cameras and audio recording require particular care. Fleet operators should ensure their approach reflects their legal, employment and data protection responsibilities, taking appropriate advice where needed.
A simple reporting route also matters. Drivers need to know how to report a damaged camera, obscured lens or warning indicator, especially when a vehicle is working away from its home depot.
